Burton Albion, seeking to recover from Tuesday’s defeat at Wycombe, made two changes to their starting lineup. Terence Vancooten returned from suspension, and Ruman Burrell was reinstated after recovering from a groin strain, marking his first start in several weeks.

A cagey first half, characterised by limited opportunities, saw Bolton Wanderers take the lead in the 22nd minute. Aaron Collins drove down the left flank, and despite initial signs of danger averted, a slip by Godwin-Malife allowed Collins to deliver a precise pass to Aaron Morley, who emphatically fired past Crocombe. Brewers 0-1 Bolton.

Trailing at the interval, Burton faced an uphill battle. With just 30% possession and no shots on target, Gary Bowyer’s side needed a significant improvement in the second half.

The Brewers began the second period with increased intensity. Burrell’s industrious play earned a corner, from which Webster’s effort was blocked. Shortly after, Godwin-Malife’s delivery found Burrell, whose shot was well saved by Bolton goalkeeper Southwood.

Burton equalised in the 52nd minute following a series of corners. Webster’s well-placed delivery was met by Sweeney at the far post. His initial header was blocked, but the ball subsequently crossed the line as confirmed by goal-line technology. A lengthy consultation with the assistant referee, who had raised his flag for an unspecified infringement, ensued. However, to the relief of the home supporters, the referee awarded the goal. Replays suggested the ball may have deflected off Sweeney’s hand, but few in yellow and black were complaining. Brewers 1-1 Bolton.

Bolton regained the lead almost immediately. After Morley’s free-kick was blocked by the wall, the ball fell to Sheehan approximately 25 yards out, who struck a powerful shot past Crocombe, leaving him helpless. Brewers 1-2 Bolton.

In the 69th minute, Webster unleashed a spectacular 30-yard volley following a cleared free-kick, forcing Southwood to produce an excellent fingertip save to tip the ball over the bar.

Burrell squandered a golden opportunity to equalise in the 74th minute, heading over from close range after a pinpoint cross from Vancooten. Four minutes later, McKiernan’s excellent work down the left created another chance for Burrell, but his effort was well saved by Southwood.

Bolton expertly managed the closing stages, slowing the game’s tempo and prompting eight minutes of added time. Burton, desperate for an equaliser, pushed Sweeney forward. In the 93rd minute, Sweeney’s challenge led to the ball falling to Lofthouse, who snatched at his shot, sending it high over the bar.

This result marks two consecutive defeats for the Brewers. However, Bowyer will take encouragement from his side’s improved second-half performance and the chances created. To secure their league status, Burton must convert these opportunities into goals.
